When it comes to couple photos, the ones that truly stand out aren’t the stiff poses or picture-perfect smiles—they’re the ones that feel like you. The laughter, the glances, the little in-between moments that tell your story. Those are the images you’ll look back on years from now and instantly remember how you felt.
That’s exactly what I aim to capture in every couples session, like my recent shoot with Julia and Jack at Rexhame Beach in Marshfield, MA. The sun was setting, the tide was low, and the light had that soft golden glow that makes everything feel like magic. But what made their photos special
Don’t Overthink the Posing
The secret to candid, natural-looking photos? Don’t overthink it. You don’t have to be a model or know what to do with your hands—I’ll guide you through prompts that help you relax and connect.
During Julia and Jack’s session, I started with some easy movement prompts: walking along the shoreline, bumping shoulders, and twirling each other in the water. They were laughing, running barefoot through the waves, and completely forgetting there was a camera on them.
That’s when the magic happens—when you stop posing for the camera and start being with each other.
Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera
It can feel weird at first having a camera pointed at you, but the best way to loosen up is to focus on your partner instead. Whisper something funny, tell an inside joke, or reminisce about how you met.
I remember Julia leaning on Jack’s shoulder completely instinctively and naturally as the sun set beautifully behind them. And just as naturally, Jack placed a sweet kiss on the top of her head. That split-second ended up being one of my favorite shots from the night.
When you focus on connecting with each other, everything else naturally falls into place.
Choose a Location That Feels Comfortable
Where you shoot can make a huge difference in how relaxed you feel. Whether that’s the beach, a park, or your favorite downtown spot, pick somewhere that feels you.
For Julia and Jack, Rexhame Beach was perfect—it had space to explore, room to run, and that laid-back coastal vibe that fit their personalities. If you’re playful, choose a spot where you can move around. If you’re more introverted, somewhere quiet and scenic might be better.
The goal is to create an environment where you can just be yourselves.
Embrace the In-Between Moments
The best photos often happen between the “real” poses. When you’re walking back to your spot, laughing after a prompt, or brushing the hair out of your partner’s face.
Some of my favorite frames from Julia and Jack’s session weren’t even the ones I planned—they were the ones where they were laughing while trying to think of a “dad joke” or deciding to race each other along the shore. Those little moments told their story better than any posed photo ever could.
That’s why I always encourage movement and play—it keeps things genuine and fun.
Trust the Process (and Your Photographer!)
When you show up ready to have fun, trust me to handle the rest. I’ll guide you through natural prompts, find the best light, and capture those fleeting, heartfelt moments that happen in between.
Julia and Jack trusted me fully to take creative control, and in return, we created a gallery full of warmth, laughter, and connection—images that feel like them.
