One of the most common questions I get before a family session is, “What should we wear?”

And I totally get it — choosing outfits that feel natural, flattering, and true to your family can feel overwhelming. But here’s the good news: with Cape Cod’s soft coastal light and beautiful scenery, you’re already halfway to stunning photos.

As a Cape Cod photographer, I’ve photographed dozens of families at beaches, farms, and trails all across the Cape. Over time, I’ve learned which colors, fabrics, and styles look amazing in photos — and which ones tend to clash with the setting. This guide will help you plan your outfits with confidence so your photos feel relaxed, timeless, and beautifully you.

Choose a Color Palette That Complements The Scenery

Cape Cod’s natural palette — ocean blues, sandy neutrals, soft greens, and golden light — pairs beautifully with light, earthy tones. I always recommend starting with a neutral base and adding soft pops of color to bring warmth and personality.

Best colors for Cape Cod beaches: cream, beige, light blue, white, sage, and dusty rose.

For grassy fields or rustic settings: tan, olive, navy, terracotta, or muted yellow.

Avoid: bright neons or loud patterns — they pull focus away from your family’s connection.

Tip: Instead of matching perfectly, aim for coordinated tones and textures. For example, Mom in a flowy cream dress, Dad in a light blue button-up, and kids in simple cotton or linen outfits — everything feels cohesive but still natural.

Dress for the Season (and the Cape Cod Breeze!)

Each season on Cape Cod has its own personality:

Spring: Pastels, cardigans, and floral prints that pop against new greenery.

Summer: Breezy linens, sundresses, rolled sleeves, and bare feet on the sand.

Fall: Cozy sweaters, corduroy, boots, and warm muted tones for golden-hour sessions at Bourne Farm or the cranberry bogs.

Winter: Knits, long coats, scarves, and earth tones for a timeless, coastal feel.

Cape Cod weather can change fast — I always encourage clients to bring a few light layers. Wind-swept hair and movement in fabric actually photograph beautifully (some of my favorite shots come from those in-between, imperfect moments!), but you may also want to bring a hair-brush or elastic for a bit of control during the session.

Keep Comfort and Connection First

When your family feels comfortable, your photos instantly feel more genuine.

I design my sessions to be fun and relaxed — we’ll walk, play, laugh, and capture all the small moments that make your family unique. That’s why it’s so important to choose clothing that lets you move and be yourselves.

If your kids can run, twirl, and explore comfortably, they’ll stay happy (and that joy shines in your photos). Don’t stress about perfection — I’ll guide you through natural poses and prompts that bring out real smiles.

Match Your Outfits to Your Session Location

Some of my favorite spots for Cape Cod family photos:

  • Boardwalks & Beaches: Neutral tones, soft blues, and flowing fabrics that catch the wind.
  • Local Farms: Warm autumn tones, layers, and cozy textures.
  • Lighthouses: Classic whites and blues for clean, coastal portraits.

When you book your session, I can help you pick the perfect location and color palette based on your family’s style and the look you’re going for. For a few ideas to help you get started, check out my Pinterest Inspiration Board!

Quick Outfit Prep Tips

  • Lay everything out together to make sure your colors flow.
  • Steam or iron clothes the night before.
  • Avoid logos and big patterns that distract from your faces.
  • Bring an extra outfit for little ones — beach sand and salty air have a way of sneaking in!

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, the best family photos aren’t about what you’re wearing — they’re about who you are together.

The laughter, the little in-between moments, the way your kids look at you and play together — that’s what I want to capture. Your outfits just help bring out the beauty and emotion that’s already there.

If you’re ready to plan your family photo session on Cape Cod, I’d love to help you create something beautiful and relaxed — filled with love, laughter, and salt air.
