One of the questions I get asked most often is: “How do you know what to do during a session?”

The short answer? A lot of planning happens before we ever start shooting.

Whether you’re booking couples portraits, family photos, senior sessions, or event photography, I want every session to feel relaxed, intentional, and totally you. So today I’m walking you through exactly how I plan a photo session—from that very first inquiry to gallery delivery—so you know what to expect (and can stress a whole lot less).

Step 1: The Inquiry & Getting to Know You

Every session starts with a conversation. When you inquire, I’m not just looking at dates and locations—I’m learning you.

I ask questions like:

  • What’s the occasion (or vibe)?
  • Have you done professional photos before?
  • Are you drawn to anything specific in my work?
  • How do you want your photos to feel?

This helps me understand your comfort level, expectations, and what matters most to you. No two sessions are the same, and I never want you to feel like you’re being plugged into a template.

Step 2: Location Planning & Timing

One we know the vibe, we’ll talk through location options. Sometimes clients already have a spot in mind, and sometimes they have no idea where to start—both are totally fine.

I help with:

  • Choosing a location that fits your style (beachy, cozy, urban, nature, etc.)
  • Making sure the spot works well for photos (lighting, crowds, accessibility)
  • Picking the best time of day (hello, golden hour ✨)

Timing can make or break a session, so this is a big piece of the planning process.

Step 3: Outfit Guidance & Styling Tips

This is where a lot of questions pop up, but I am here to help!

I am happy to give outfit guidance and inspiration to help you:

  • Choose colors that photograph beautifully
  • Coordinate without being too “matchy”
  • Feel confident and comfortable in what you’re wearing

If you’re unsure, you can send photos of outfit options and I’ll help you decide. The goal is for you to feel comfortable and authentic, with a bit of polish and timelessness!

Step 4: Pre-Session Prep & What to Expect

Before your session, I’ll check in to see if you have any remaining questions and double check timing, weather, etc. We can also go over

  • What to bring
  • How to prep the day of
  • What the session will actually feel like (especially if you’re nervous)

If you’re thinking, “I’m awkward in front of the camera,” trust me—you’re not alone. So many people say this and it’s literally my job to guide you every step of the way. Plus, we make it fun and light, so its nothing to stress over!

Step 5: The Session Itself

During your session, I’ll:

  • Guide you into flattering poses
  • Give prompts so moments feel natural, not forced
  • Adjust as we go based on what’s working best for you or what you're comfortable with

You never have to wonder what to do with your hands or how to stand. I’m talking, moving, and showing you exactly what to do the whole time. My goal is for it to feel more like hanging out than “posing for photos.”

Pro tip: pretend you're having a video taken, rather than still photos. This the movement flow and feel more natural!

Step 6: Editing & Gallery Delivery

After your session, I carefully cull and edit your images in my signature style—true to color, timeless, and natural.

When your gallery is ready, you’ll receive:

  • A private online gallery
  • High-resolution downloads
  • Easy options for printing and sharing

I want your photos to be something you love now and still love years down the line.

Why Planning Matters

A great photo session isn’t about being “photogenic.” It’s about:

  • Feeling comfortable
  • Trusting the process
  • Working with someone who’s prepared and invested

The more planning we do together ahead of time, the more relaxed and confident you’ll feel during your session—and that always shows in the photos. And as always, I'm available to answer any and all questions whenever they arise!
