Your senior year is full of once-in-a-lifetime moments — and your senior photos are one of them! These images celebrate you: your personality, your hard work, and your next chapter.
But with so many photographers out there, how do you choose the one who’s truly right for you?
As someone who’s photographed dozens of Cape Cod and Boston seniors, I know how important this decision is. The right photographer will make you feel comfortable, confident, and genuinely you in every shot. So before you book your session, here are five key questions to help guide your search — and make sure you love both the experience and the photos.
1. Does Their Photography Style Match Your Vision?
Every photographer has a unique style — some love bright and airy photos, others go for bold, moody tones or classic natural light.
Take time to scroll through a photographer’s portfolio or Instagram and ask yourself:
- Do their photos feel natural or more posed?
- How do they capture light and color?
- Can you imagine yourself in those photos?
My personal style is natural, candid, and storytelling-driven — I focus on capturing real expressions and small moments that show your personality. I want your photos to feel like you on your best day — confident, relaxed, and genuinely happy.
If you’re drawn to images that feel effortless and timeless, you’re probably on the right track with a photographer whose work reflects that vibe.
2. Do You Feel Comfortable Around Them?
The biggest key to great senior photos? Feeling at ease.
During your session, you’ll be laughing, posing, and sometimes being a little silly — so your photographer should make you feel comfortable and confident.
When you reach out, pay attention to how they communicate:
- Do they seem friendly and excited to work with you?
- Do they communicate efficiently and effectively?
- Do they take time to answer your questions and learn about you?
- Do they help you plan your session (location ideas, outfit guidance, etc.)?
When seniors work with me, I always start with a questionnaire to get to know their personality, style, and comfort level. That way, I can plan a session that truly fits them — whether that’s dancing on the beach, wandering through a park, or showcasing a sport or hobby that’s special to them.
3. Do They Know Great Locations for Senior Photos?
Location can make a huge difference in the overall look and feel of your gallery.
A great photographer doesn’t just show up with a camera — they’ll help you choose the perfect spot based on your vision, outfits, and personality.
Some of my favorite Cape Cod senior photo locations include:
- Sandwich Boardwalk: Golden light, wooden textures, and stunning ocean views — perfect for sunset photos.
- Downtown Sandwich: A mix of brick, greenery, and classic Cape Cod charm for a timeless look.
- Veterans Beach (Hyannis): Open sand, soft dunes, and a gorgeous horizon line for relaxed, summery photos.
- Talbot’s Point (East Sandwich): Natural, peaceful, and more of a woodsy vibe — ideal for seniors who love the outdoors.
- Boston Public Garden: Beautiful foliage and bright blooms paired with urban charm and history.
Wherever we go, I always scout the lighting and photo-worthy locations ahead of time so we can make the most of your session — no stress, just fun and beautiful results.
4. What’s Included in Their Packages?
Before you book, make sure you know what you’re getting!
Some photographers offer digital galleries, while others include prints, albums, or outfit changes. Ask about:
- How many photos are included
- Turnaround time
- Whether you can bring outfit changes or props
- How long your session lasts
I like to keep things simple — all of my senior sessions include a mix of candid and posed photos, high-resolution downloads, and plenty of guidance before and during the shoot. Most of my seniors end up with way more photos than promised because I can never resist delivering extra favorites! Plus, my online galleries make it easy to order prints, photo books, and more.
5. Do Their Photos Tell a Story?
The best proposals always include a touch that’s uniquely you. Here are a few ideas that photograph beautifully:
- Bring a letter, scrapbook, or keepsake that tells your story.
- Have a picnic or champagne toast waiting nearby.
- Incorporate a favorite song, quote, or spot that’s special to your relationship.
- End the session with a walk along the beach or dancing under the sunset.
I love helping my couples brainstorm creative touches that make the proposal feel personal and memorable — no cookie-cutter moments here!
