Step 1: Choose the Perfect Location

The first step is picking a spot that feels personal and meaningful. Cape Cod has no shortage of romantic backdrops — and the right location will set the tone for your entire proposal.

Here are a few of my favorites:

• Sandwich Boardwalk: Perfect for golden hour proposals with ocean views.
• Nobska Light: Wide open space, crashing waves, and stunning sunsets.
• Gray’s Beach: Beautiful boardwalks and calm, glowy evening light.
• Shawme Pond: Peaceful, romantic setting (sometimes the swans even pay a visit!)
• National Seashore: Picturesque, classic Cape Cod with a view you just can't beat

Step 2: Pick the Right Time (and Lighting!)

Timing is everything for proposal photos. The best light on Cape Cod is typically:

• Sunrise: Soft, romantic, and quiet (perfect if you want privacy).
• Golden Hour (about 30 minutes before sunset): Dreamy, warm, and flattering light for portraits after the big “yes!”

Once we choose your location, I’ll recommend the best time to meet based on lighting, tides, and crowds — so everything feels relaxed and natural.

Step 3: Plan the Surprise

This is where the fun (and nerves!) really kick in. We’ll come up with a solid plan together to make sure everything runs smoothly and stays a surprise.

One way to do this is to tell your partner you’ve planned a “couples session” or a “quick beach photoshoot” — and I’ll pose you naturally until you’re in the perfect spot. When you drop to one knee, I’ll already be ready, camera in hand, capturing every reaction from both of you.

You can also take them for a peaceful walk, plan a surprise picnic, or entice them to explore a new location. I’ll be nearby and ready to capture the moment as soon as it happens!

I always send my clients a quick photo diagram or mini map ahead of time so you’ll know exactly where to stand and what to expect — without spoiling the surprise.



Tip: Keep the ring box in your jacket pocket (not jeans — those tend to show!) and practice opening it smoothly beforehand.

Step 4: Plan What Happens After the “Yes!”

Once the proposal moment happens, the next few minutes are pure emotion — hugs, laughter, happy tears. That’s when I quietly step in and capture those first few minutes of joy, followed by some relaxed portraits together.

Some couples enjoy a mini engagement session right after the proposal — others invite family or friends to join for a surprise celebration nearby.

Step 5: Make It Personal

The best proposals always include a touch that’s uniquely you. Here are a few ideas that photograph beautifully:

• Bring a letter, scrapbook, or keepsake that tells your story.
• Have a picnic or champagne toast waiting nearby.
• Incorporate a favorite song, quote, or spot that’s special to your relationship.
• End the session with a walk along the beach or dancing under the sunset.

Step 6: Relax and Enjoy the Moment

Once the planning is done, all that’s left is to soak it in. Don’t worry about posing or being perfect — I’ll gently guide you through everything while keeping the focus on your connection and genuine reactions. My goal is to capture the emotions exactly as they unfold, so when you look back at your photos, you’ll feel that moment all over again.
