When you think of family photos, your mind might jump to warm summer sunsets or colorful fall leaves — but winter can be just as magical for family sessions. From cozy sweaters and snowy backdrops to golden light on quiet beaches, winter family photos have a calm, timeless feel that’s hard to beat.

If you’re planning a session this season, here are my favorite ways to make winter family photos beautiful, comfortable, and full of joy.

Embrace the Season

Instead of hiding from the cold, lean into what makes winter special. Think chunky knits, wool coats, scarves, and boots — outfits that look great and keep everyone warm. Neutral tones like cream, tan, gray, and soft greens photograph beautifully against winter light, and adding textures like fleece, cable-knit, or plaid gives extra depth to your images.

Even if there’s no snow, the winter light on Cape Cod or up near Boston has a soft glow that makes skin tones look incredible and gives your photos that cozy, golden feel.

Choose the Right Time and Location

Winter light fades fast, so I usually schedule sessions in the early afternoon when the sun sits lower in the sky. This gives you that dreamy golden-hour effect without the chill of dusk.

For locations, think beyond the beach (though a winter beach session can be gorgeous!). Consider:

  • Wooded trails or parks for warm-toned backdrops.
  • Downtown spots for fun, layered textures with brick, lights, or snow.
  • At-home sessions for cozy, lifestyle-style photos with blankets, cocoa, and cuddles.

There’s no wrong choice — it’s all about what fits your family’s vibe best.

Dress for Comfort (and Layers!)

Comfort is key in the colder months. Bundle up in cute, layered outfits — you can always remove a coat or hat for a few shots. Mittens, scarves, and beanies not only add variety but also make for adorable, natural moments as you keep each other warm.

Tip: Bring hand warmers for little ones! Warm hands = happy smiles.

Keep It Playful

Winter sessions don’t have to feel posed or stiff. Some of my favorite family photos come from movement — walking together, snuggling under a blanket, or making show angels.

The more fun you have, the more natural your photos will look. Kids especially tend to light up when they can play instead of just standing still — and that joy always shines through the lens.

Consider an Indoor or “Cozy Home” Session

If being outside sounds too chilly, indoor family sessions can be just as meaningful. Think baking cookies together, reading stories on the couch, or playing board games by the fire.

I love capturing families in their element — the real, simple moments that tell your story. These sessions feel especially nostalgic during winter, when home feels extra warm and inviting.

Don’t Wait for Perfect Weather

Winter in New England can be unpredictable, but don’t let that stop you! Cloudy days often bring soft, even lighting that’s actually ideal for photos. And if there’s a light snowfall? That’s your cue — snow adds instant magic and makes everything look cinematic.

Make It a Tradition!

Scheduling a winter session each year is a fun way to mark a new chapter — whether it’s your first season as a couple or a chance to capture a cozy family moment together. It’s a cozy reminder that love and connection shine in every season.
